Executives Weigh in on “Best in the State” Awards
What makes Nevada State Bank best in the state? Our executives give their insights.
Recent readers’ polls in Nevada’s three metropolitan areas named Nevada State Bank as the best bank, rating it above both local banks and national financial institutions.1 What factors made people across the state name Nevada State Bank as their bank of choice? Members of the bank’s executive team gave their insights on what it takes to reach the top ranking.
“I think we won ‘Best in the State’ because of the longevity of our branch supervisors and managers, who are critical to growing and building long-term relationships,” said Craig Kirkland, EVP/Director of Retail Banking. “Many of our clients have been with us for decades, and they bring their children and grandchildren in to their branch to open bank accounts with the people they know and have confidence in. How we treat our clients is also key. One of the Core Values emphasized throughout all our lines of business is Extraordinary Service, and our colleagues try to live that every day.”
Randy Boesch, EVP/Director of The Private Bank by Nevada State Bank, agreed that long-term relationships and client service were key to winning the awards. “We obsess about service, and the client is the focus of all we do,” he said. He explains that relationships are built by consistently taking care of clients’ needs over time. “One of our relationship managers called on a business owner for four years,” he said. “At first he was skeptical, but little by little, he gave us bits and pieces of his banking business. His company grew exponentially, and because we showed that we were able to service his accounts as it grew, it’s developed into a $20 million relationship. As he became very wealthy, his needs changed, and we recently pulled in a Wealth Management team to help him with estate planning. He grew from being hesitant about us to being a raving fan.”
Nevada State Bank has succeeded in developing mutually beneficial relationships with business clients across the state. Megan Comfort, VP/Small Business Manager in southern Nevada, explained, “I believe our bank is Best in the State because we care about our clients and our community. We do many things above and beyond a bank’s normal services to help business owners and individuals. We host lunch-and-learn events on topics important to families and businesses, we supply our customers with regular updated economic content, and we have a website (Nevadasmallbusiness.com) dedicated to helping our business community. In Northern Nevada, Jana Benton said, “Nevada State Bank won Best Bank in Reno because we treat each and every client as an individual.” As SVP for Small Business Lending, she encourages her team to get to know each client and take the time to understand their unique personal and business situation. When a business owner approached her team recently about getting a loan for his company’s building, the relationship manager pointed out that the client’s home mortgage carried a high interest rate. Not only did the client get the business loan he wanted, but he was also able to save money each month by refinancing his home loan. Going above and beyond to discover all the client’s needs resulted in a win-win situation.
While large businesses and wealthy clients benefit from Nevada State Bank’s dedication to client satisfaction, the bank’s Core Value of Extraordinary Service is most often demonstrated in day-to-day interactions with small depositors and mom-and-pop companies. Kirkland provided an example: a non-client would come into his local branch each week to cash his paycheck and pay a $5 fee for cashing a non-client check. A branch employee explained that he could save $20 a month by opening a checking account, and he was grateful for the information and the assistance. Small deeds like this can make a difference in people’s lives, and that’s what develops client loyalty and good will.
Bank executives also take pride in the good works their colleagues do in their communities. Kirkland pointed out that bank employees spend more than 4,000 hours each year volunteering for non-profit groups and local organizations in the cities and towns where they work, helping to serve and improve their communities.
