2025 NSB Small Business Survey Reveals Optimism Amid Challenges

Nevada companies focus on navigating rising costs and prioritizing operational efficiency.

The 2025 Nevada State Bank Small Business Survey offers a compelling look into the mindset of Nevada's business owners, revealing a landscape marked by optimism and significant challenges. While the survey indicates a strong sense of economic optimism, a deeper analysis reveals that concerns about expenses and the need for greater efficiency are central to Nevada small businesses.

Optimism Tempered with Challenges

The small business survey highlights a noteworthy increase in optimism regarding the national and state economies. Approximately 63% of respondents believe the national economy is headed in the right direction, and an even larger 72% expressed confidence in Nevada's economic trajectory. This represents a positive shift in sentiment, suggesting that many businesses feel the economy is on a favorable path.

However, this optimism is juxtaposed with growing concerns about the increasing costs of goods and services. For the third time in the last four years, the cost of goods and services, along with healthcare costs, ranked as the top concern among respondents. This underscores the pressure businesses face in managing their expenditures in an environment where inflation, though moderated, remains a key factor.

“While the data reveals a remarkably optimistic outlook, with small business owners expecting continued improvement in the business environment and their profitability for the year,” said Terry Shirey, president and CEO of Nevada State Bank. “However, this confidence exists alongside growing concerns about rising costs of goods, services, and health care.”

Efficiency as a Strategy

In light of these pressures, it's not surprising that the survey reveals a strong focus on efficiency. A significant 17% of respondents identified "cutting costs and improving operational efficiency" as the single most important opportunity for their business in the coming year. This focus surpasses other opportunities like launching new products or entering new markets, highlighting the immediate need for businesses to streamline their operations.

“This tension between increasing confidence and growing concerns about costs may explain why many see their greatest opportunities in operational efficiency and cost management,” said Shirey, also pointing out that Nevada's business leaders said they have responded to challenges like inflation and tight labor markets by embracing innovation and adapting to delivering more for less.

The survey also provides insights into the workforce challenges faced by Nevada's small businesses and how these challenges intersect with the pursuit of operational efficiency. While recruiting quality employees remains a significant concern, 57% of businesses plan to increase their workforce in 2025. This suggests that businesses are investing in growth, but also implies a need to optimize their workforce to maximize productivity and efficiency. Businesses are exploring various strategies to navigate the labor market with some focusing on developing employees internally, a cost-effective way to fill skill gaps and improve employee retention. This approach aligns with the broader theme of efficiency by optimizing every available resource.

Outlook for Growth and Profitability

"Nevada's small business community is entering a period of opportunity and growth," said Megan Comfort, executive vice president and small business manager at Nevada State Bank. "Through this survey and our ongoing direct conversations with small business owners, we understand that many are anticipating growth in both revenues and profitability this year, along with increased hiring opportunities. At the same time, businesses are strategically focused on improving operational efficiency and exploring new markets. We are encouraged to see this level of optimism and strategic planning."

The survey suggests that businesses are making deliberate financial choices in response to factors like inflation and interest rate fluctuations. A majority of businesses reported raising prices, while others increased their hours of operation or reduced their workforce in response. These actions demonstrate a proactive approach to managing costs and maintaining profitability in a challenging economic climate.

The survey reinforces the importance of efficiency for future success as a significant percentage of respondents (68%) expect improvements in Nevada's business environment in the coming year. Moreover, a majority predict increases in revenues (67%) and profits (66%).

However, achieving this growth will likely depend on businesses' ability to manage expenses and enhance efficiency. Emphasis on cost-cutting and operational improvements suggests that efficiency will be a key driver of profitability and sustainability in the years ahead.

Empowered for the Future

The 2025 Nevada State Bank Small Business Survey paints a nuanced picture of Nevada's small business landscape. While economic optimism is on the rise, businesses remain acutely aware of the challenges posed by rising costs. In response, a focus on efficiency has emerged as a critical strategy for navigating the current environment and ensuring future success. The survey's findings provide valuable insights for businesses, policymakers, and stakeholders seeking to support the continued growth and resilience of Nevada's small business community.
