Five Leadership Tips for Preventing Employee Burnout

Prevent burnout through appreciation, adaptability, and support.

Small business leaders might not spot burnout among employees until it's too late. However, it’s a challenge that must be addressed, as it leads to decreased productivity, lower morale, and higher turnover. Below are five leadership strategies that can help prevent employee burnout.

1. Recognize Good Work

When you see your employees doing good work, acknowledge it. Praise their efforts personally and during team meetings. When employees feel appreciated, they are less likely to experience burnout. Recognition gives them a sense of accomplishment and reinforces that their contributions matter. This can be highly motivating. Appreciated employees also tend to be more loyal, increasing the likelihood of long-term retention.

You don’t have to wait for major milestones to recognize good work—celebrate small wins. If you use a platform like Slack, consider setting up a dedicated channel to highlight jobs well done.

2. Focus on Results Rather Than Control

Another way to prevent burnout is to focus on the outcomes of work rather than micromanaging how it’s done. Not all employees work the same way. One person might achieve equal or better results using a different approach than another in a similar role. Be flexible with the “how” and concentrate on the results.

"Burnout is compounded by inelastic work policies and the perception of unreasonable expectations that make employees feel they lack control over their lives," says Scott Healy at Entrepreneur.com.* "Instead of setting policies set in stone, leadership should focus on valuing outcomes and results rather than on prescribing how employees must work."

3. Emphasize Mental Health

Make your team’s mental health a priority. Encourage open communication and let them know it’s okay to speak up when they feel stressed. Discuss the importance of mental health and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Regular one-on-one sessions can help address both performance and well-being. Ask how they’re managing their workload and whether they’re feeling overwhelmed. Simply knowing that you’re listening can make a big difference. When employees feel heard and supported, they’re more likely to share their challenges.

4. Play to Employees’ Strengths

Identify your employees’ strengths so you can position them for success. Understanding their skills and work styles allows you to assign roles that align with their capabilities, reducing the risk of burnout.

"When people have the opportunity to tap into their strengths, they are more engaged, more effective, less stressed and more focused on doing their best work -- rather than seeing their job as a burden," says Gallup.** "Gallup analytics consistently prove that managers get the best performance from their team members when they identify what their people do best, praise them for it, and guide them into tasks and partnerships that maximize their natural talents. World-class managers know where their employees excel and look for career opportunities that empower employees to use their talents and strengths."

5. Lead by Example

As a leader, you’re also susceptible to burnout—so take steps to prevent it and lead by example. If employees see you sending late-night emails, skipping vacations, and working long hours, they may feel pressured to do the same. Model healthy work habits by maintaining your own work-life balance. Set communication boundaries, such as avoiding emails after hours. Take vacations and talk about them. Take lunch breaks. These actions show your team that it’s okay for them to do the same.

Hardworking employees are valuable, but overworking leads to burnout, which harms both mental health and productivity. Use these leadership strategies to keep your team happy, healthy, and motivated—key ingredients for a successful business.
