Nine Things to Consider Before Switching Jobs

Consider all the pros and cons before making this important decision

With so many job options available these days, it’s easy to think about making a change when your current situation no longer feels challenging or upwardly mobile. This kind of move comes with a lot to think about, however, and shouldn’t be done on a whim.  Here are nine things to consider when you’re thinking of a job change.

1. Weigh the pros and cons of your current job

Many people are unhappy with certain aspects of their employment but can still find things they enjoy about it. Make a list of pros and cons so you can see the benefits and downsides before making a decision. You might include details like the hours you work, the daily commute, whether you have health care benefits and how good they are, the opportunities for advancement, and your relationships (both pro and con) with your supervisor and co-workers.

2. Weigh the pros and cons of the job you're seeking

It’s easy to find the pros in a new job, such as better pay or different hours, but it’s also important to think about the amount of time it will add if there is a longer commute, what the stress factor will be (especially if the position will be a step up to a management role), and the benefits package, if you know those details in advance. Be honest in your evaluations of both sides.

3. Make sure you have the right qualifications

If you’ve weighed the pros and cons and believe this change is right for you, assess your skills and think about what you can do to stand out from other applicants. You might be able to take an online course or get a certification to grow your expertise and strengthen your résumé.

4. Educate yourself on the job you're seeking

Read about the position to find more about what will be expected of you. Will it require long hours, company travel, or special training? Will you have access to the tools, classes, or resources you need? Make a list of questions you have about the job so you can ask your interviewer about them.

5. Learn all you can about the company you want to work for

It’s important to also do research about the company so you can find out more about their culture, practices, and benefits. Utilize social media platforms such as LinkedIn and check out their website to get a feel for their customer base and their goals. You can also read customer reviews to find out how they handle issues. The more you know about the company, the easier it will be to impress your interviewers, since they’ll like to see that potential employees do their homework and are prepared.

6. Set yourself up to leave on good terms

Once you get through the interview and if you accept the position, it’s crucial to set up an end date that gives your current employer enough time to fill your position. This can be challenging, especially if you’re ready to move on, but it’s a good idea to lay the groundwork for good references and possibly even a return to your current employer in the future. Burning bridges could come back to haunt you in the end.

7.  Set up solid references

Employers typically want to contact at least three references before taking on a new hire, so think about whom you want to list on your application. These should be dependable individuals, preferably managers or supervisors, who have worked with you for a period of time and can attest to your abilities as a trustworthy employee.

8. Keep networking

Even if you’ve already gotten the job, it’s a good idea to start networking and making connections in the field. Social media is a great place to start, and you can also look for conventions and other events where you can meet up with new people or even your future coworkers.

9. Set aside money to help with transition

Preparing to switch jobs requires financial planning. Depending on your start date, you may have to wait weeks for your first paycheck, and your health care benefits may not start right away. It’s a good idea to plan ahead for the first month or two and ensure you have enough in savings to cover your needs during this time.

Getting through the job search, interview process, and final days at your current job can be stressful, but by planning thoroughly you can help ensure that the transition is a smooth one.
