Ten Family Budget Tips

Look for creative ways to stretch your money

Inflation is hitting the country hard, and many families are looking for ways to stretch their money as prices for basic items are increasing.  We hope these 10 family budget tips can help.

 1. Work Together as a Family

Get everyone in the household on the same page about your mission to save money, and discuss ways that each family member can contribute to this goal. Have regular family meetings to address the topic, and get the kids involved in your money-saving program.

2. Get More Out of Your Food Spending

Food costs have been on the rise, and families are feeling it at the grocery store. It's time to get smart about spending on food. Try to buy items that everyone in the family enjoys to minimize the number of products you buy. Buy generic, and plan meals around ingredients to utilize the same ones for more than one meal and reduce the amount of others you'll need to buy.

3. Utilize the School Bus or Carpool

If you've been taking your kids to school in the mornings and/or picking
them up in the afternoon, consider having them ride the bus to save you the gas
money and save time out of your day. If that doesn't work for your family, see if you can share driving duties with parents whose kids attend the same school.

4. Find Inexpensive Outing Ideas

Going out can be pricey. Even a simple trip to the movies with snacks and drinks for the family can quickly eat away at your budget. Look for free and inexpensive activities in your area that your family can enjoy without spending too much. You might even make some great memories as a result.

5. Buy Gently Used

The merchandise you purchase doesn't necessarily have to be brand new to be effective or enjoyed.  Look online for sites like eBay or Mercari for deals on gently used merchandise. When you go shopping offline, check out secondhand  stores, flea markets, and yard sales for great deals. Kid’s clothing, toys and books are usually plentiful at yard sales, so try those first before paying retail for items that will soon be outgrown or out of fashion.

6. Work Together to Reduce Your Electric Bill

It's not difficult for a family to use a great amount of electricity from month to month, especially if parents work from home and/or family members like to watch TV or play video games. Discuss ways that each person can contribute to bringing down the amount of electricity, whether it's making sure the thermostat is set at the proper level or turning off lights in empty rooms. Every little bit helps.

7. Conserve Water

Water can also be conserved to bring down the amount of money you're spending on your utility bills. Talk to your family about taking shorter showers, not leaving the water running while brushing teeth, waiting until the dishwasher is full to run it, etc.

8. Consider Refinancing Your Mortgage

You may be able to reduce the monthly payment on your family home by refinancing your mortgage. Keep an eye on interest rates to get a good one locked in at the right time. Take a look at this calculator to see if refinancing is right for you.

9. Reduce Birthday Costs

If you have kids, you may be used to spending a significant amount of money on birthdays. Beyond gifts, there can be party expenses, special meals, and other costs associated with making these days as memorable as possible. If you're looking to save money, consider more frugal birthday ideas. Trade expensive parties for sleepovers with friends, and restaurant birthday dinners for backyard cookouts. Even a trip to a public park can provide plenty of fun without the cost of other recreational venues.

10. Set Up Savings Accounts for the Kids

It's never too early to teach your kids about saving money, and one great way to do this is to set up savings accounts for them. When they receive money, whether it's from allowance or birthday/holiday gifts, they can add it to their account to access later. A Young Savers account requires only $5 to open.

It's one thing for parents to work out a budget and find ways to save money, but when you get the whole family involved, it adds up to greater savings. Talk about budgets and savings regularly with your family to help everyone stay motivated and keep costs down. Remember, this doesn't have to cut into an enjoyable lifestyle. You can make it fun and rewarding, while teaching your children valuable lessons about budgeting and planning for the future.
