Eight Tips for Making Better Financial Choices

Be smart about your money. If you make better choices, your future should be brighter.

When the economy isn't in great shape, it can be difficult to stay on track financially. However, if you make good choices, you can better secure your future and help meet your financial goals. Here are eight tips for making better choices with your money.

1. Know Your Budget

It all begins with having a budget and knowing what you can afford. The worst financial choices are made when you spend above your means, so know what you have before making any financial decisions.

2. Shop Around

When making purchases, it's usually best to shop around for a better price. If you do this on a regular basis, you can save a great deal of money over time. However, price isn't everything when it comes to value.

"There’s more to compare than just the price," says Jesse Campbell at Money Management International. (1) "A $100 laptop and a $2,000 laptop probably differ is more than a few crucial ways. If you're not comparison-shopping for a specific item, but rather a more general need (a new TV, a new car, a good streaming service, etc.), then it's important to understand the key features available and how those features impact the price. If you're looking for a winter coat, you should know what aspects (warmth, materials, style, color, etc.) are the most important to you and let that help guide your search. Because sometimes the more expensive option is a better value if it has more of the features you want. A cheap coat you never wear isn't a good purchase, no matter how great a deal you got."

3. Pay Close Attention to Prices

Paying the right price isn't only about shopping around for a better one. Sometimes it's paying attention to what you're buying. Inflation has caused massive upticks in prices on many goods. Items that you regularly buy at the grocery store may have increased significantly in price due to inflation. Be sure to look at prices before putting items in your cart. Otherwise, your end total might be higher than what you really wanted to pay.

4. Keep Your Debt Under Control

Pay down your debts as you can, and definitely make your payments on time to keep late fees from spiraling out of control. The more control you have over your debt, the more freedom you have to make choices about what to do with your credit and your money. Less debt equals more financial freedom.

5. Keep Up With Your Credit Score

Stay on top of your credit score and keep it in good standing. Checking it regularly will serve as a constant reminder to make the right choices and to pay your bills on time. Always strive for a higher score, and you will be making better financial choices in the process.

6. Have Goals and Keep Track of Your Progress

Think about your financial goals and determine if you are doing enough to meet them. Keep track of your progress so that you always have an idea of where you stand. Keeping the goals top of mind will help you make better choices with your money. If you don't keep track, you're more likely to make choices that put your goals further out of reach.

7. Set Up an Emergency Fund

An emergency fund will provide you with a certain amount of financial freedom. If you know you have a fund that you can turn to in an emergency, this will free you up to do more with your other finances. Set up a savings account for this purpose.

8. Speak with Your Banker

Remember that you can speak with a representative at your bank to discuss any element of your financial needs. Talk to them about your goals and they can help you figure out the best path to meet them.

Be smart about your money. If you make better choices, your future should be brighter.
