Inflation has been hitting many people hard in recent months. If this includes you, you may want to consider some ways to stretch your paycheck. These ideas may help you get more bang for your hard-earned buck.
1. Buy in Bulk
Bulk shopping is a good way to save money if you do it right. However, if you go into a bulk store and shop like you would at a regular grocery store, you're likely to overspend rather than save. Compare unit prices and only buy what you'll actually use. Avoid perishables. Buy things with long shelf lives or that can be frozen for a significant amount of time before you use them. Also, don't forget to take your storage situation into consideration. Don’t buy more than your pantry or freezer can hold. When you’re comparing prices, remember to factor in membership costs for stores like Sam's Club or Costco,
2. Buy Off-Brand
Buy off-brand or generic versions of your groceries. You will likely find that for most products, there isn't really a whole lot of difference (other than the price). The more you experiment with off-brands, the more you'll learn about which items you actually like. Then, you can make them a regular part of your purchasing and save money over the long term. If you aren't happy with a specific off-brand item, you don't have to get it again.
3. Use Less When You Can
Sometimes when you use a product, the recommended amount is more than you really need. If you can cut down how much you use, the product will last longer and save you from having to stock up as frequently.
"If you follow the guidelines on the average box of soap or detergent, you’re probably using double what you need. You can easily get by with half the amount (or ¾ the amount) and your clothes, hair and dishes will turn out fine. Cut your use of as many products as you can in half," recommends The Busy Budgeter. When it comes to food, many people often eat larger portions than the recommended serving size on the package. Start paying attention to the serving size and make your packaged foods last longer. This is likely also a healthier way to eat and may help you lose weight.
4. Skip the Gym
Skipping the gym doesn't mean cutting out exercise. While the gym may have fancy machines, weights, classes, and trainers, there is no reason why you can't get all the exercise you need at home or outdoors. There are plenty of exercises you can do to work out your entire body without any machine. If you need some ideas, watch YouTube videos for demonstrations. You're sure to find how-tos for just about any workout you can imagine. Of course, there's also going for a walk, run, jog, hike, or bike ride, not to mention sports. Get a basketball game together with some friends or start taking regular hikes. There are many ways to get fit that don't cost a dime. Start walking or biking more for transportation and you'll not only get more free exercise, you'll also save money on gas.
5. DIY
If you're a homeowner, you can't call the landlord every time something goes wrong with your home or there's an improvement you'd like to have done. You'll either have to call the experts yourself (and pay for them) or fix the problems/make improvements on your own.
"You may think some home repairs are out of your league, but even beginner DIYers can handle many of these fixes—and save a lot of money in the process!" says Jenny Stanley at Family Handyman. (2) Stanley lists over a hundred repairs that you can possibly do on your own even if you aren't a pro. These include replacing a toilet, refinishing a hardwood floor, repairing a garbage disposal, fixing lights on your car, and many other tasks.
While you may still have to spend some money to get the parts and equipment needed for many jobs, that's nothing compared to the cost of calling professionals to do the work, who will charge you for both parts and labor.
We often spend money without giving it enough thought. Maybe it's more convenient or we get set in our ways with certain products or services that we like. If you follow the advice above, however, you should find that your paychecks are going further and that you're not even missing out on much. If anything, you'll be a more efficient consumer.
