Every year, with the help of local businesses like Nevada State Bank, Communities In Schools of Nevada (CIS) collects school supplies in its “Fill the Bus” drive to help equip students with the basic tools they need to be successful in the coming school year. Clients and the general public were invited to drop off school supplies or make donations at Nevada State Bank branches in the Las Vegas Valley, Washoe County and Elko this summer.
CIS of Nevada is the local affiliate of Communities in Schools, the nation’s leading dropout prevention program. It operates resource centers in 106 public schools across Nevada, serving nearly 90,000 students each school year. In each school, CIS coordinators assess students’ needs and provide the resources they may be lacking, including tutoring and academic assistance, access to healthcare, and take-home food packages to make sure they have enough to eat on the weekends. They also provide backpacks, school supplies and clothing to students whose families cannot afford to buy them. The annual “Fill the Bus” drive helps ensure that the resource centers are fully stocked with everything from crayons for kindergarten students to binders for high schoolers.
Many Nevadans are concerned about our state’s high school graduation rate, which is among the lowest in the country. CIS is working to help Nevada schools improve that number by connecting students and their families with community assistance. CIS partners with social service agencies as well as businesses like Nevada State Bank that provide donations and volunteers.
