Twelve Ideas for Renovating Your Home This Spring

Thinking of making upgrades to your home? Here are 12 ideas to consider.

With spring approaching, many will be looking to refresh their homes beyond the typical spring cleaning. Here are 12 ideas for home renovation projects to consider.

1. Get New Flooring

New flooring is a great way to spruce up your home. It can go a long way toward making a room look nicer, especially if you've been living with old, worn-out carpet. New carpet, hard wood, or laminate flooring can all make a big aesthetic difference.

2. Update Your Bathroom(s)

A bathroom can be updated to improve functionality, accessibility, energy efficiency, or just aesthetics. A new shower or tub can also provide increased comfort and relaxation options.

3. Refresh Your Kitchen

Like a bathroom remodel, a kitchen upgrade can improve functionality, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal, but it can also help you increase storage and better organize your belongings. You can potentially give yourself more counter space to keep additional appliances or provide more cooking space.

4. Paint Your Walls

Painting your walls is a great, less expensive way to improve the look of your home. It's also easier than a lot of other improvements.

"The easiest way to change your walls is to paint them, and these days, that task is faster than ever," says Danny Lipford at Today's Homeowner.* "You used to have to apply primer before the top coat, but primer and paint all-in-one cans have simplified painting for lots of homeowners. Better yet, pick an all-in-one can with an antimicrobial mildew-resistant finish, which is great for kitchens, bathrooms, trim and cabinets."

5. Update Your Lighting

There are a number of ways you can update the lighting in your home. Buy new fixtures, and install LED lights, dimmer switches, or task lighting (direct lighting used for specific tasks). You can also look into smart lighting options, which are good for convenience and security. Altering your windows can make better use of natural light, which can save on your energy bill.

6. Upgrade Your Deck or Patio

Upgrade your deck or patio by adding new outdoor seating and decor. Add a fire pit or a tabletop fire bowl. Add a pergola, an awning, or an umbrella. New outdoor lighting can help enhance the area, and an outdoor kitchen can really take things up a notch.

7. Add Flare to the Backyard

While you're examining your outdoor options, consider additional backyard changes. Plant a new tree, add eye-catching landscaping, fountains, or a gazebo. A koi pond can add additional beauty.

8. Boost Efficiency

We touched on boosting efficiency in the bathroom and with smart and natural lighting, but you can go much further if you want to make this a focus. Upgrade to efficient appliances, improve your insulation, get a smart thermostat, and seal any air leaks that might be around windows and doors.

9. Add a Room to Your House

Maybe you'd like to add a completely new room to your home. This will require significant planning, so check on codes and regulations, and figure out the right location and design. You may want to work with an architect or designer to make sure you have solid plans before proceeding.

10. Redo Your Front Landscaping

The front of your home is the most visible part, so it should look great. One way is to have impressive landscaping. Consider the foundational plants, color of mulch and/or stones, and the overall composition. Outdoor lighting and some personal touches can help make it stand out even more. Be sure to maintain it to keep it attractive and not overgrown.

11. Buy New Furniture

Buy new furniture for your home, whether it's a new living room set, dining table, shelving, something else, or all of the above. New furniture can bring new life to a room.

12. Get Financial Assistance

These projects cover a wide range of expenses, so it may be wise to look into finance options before you set out on whatever upgrade you wish to pursue. One great option is a Home Equity Line of Credit. Nevada State bank has lines up to $2,500,000. Talk to your banker to figure out a good option for your needs.

Spring reminds us how beautiful change can be, so why not make delightful changes to your home? Develop a gameplan, figure out your financing, and get ready to have fun breathing new life into your home. Plus your hard work can add to your home’s value.
