A vacation can help recharge your energy when you've been working full time. If you have the opportunity to take a vacation, you should do so. But getting back to work afterwards isn't always an easy transition. Here are eight tips for getting back to work with comfort and ease.
Set Yourself Up for Success Beforehand
Your transition back to work will be smoother if you set yourself up before your vacation begins. Plan your return date in a way that minimizes friction. Give yourself a day or two off at home after traveling before returning to work. This gives you a chance to unwind and mentally prepare for getting back to work. Try not to leave any loose ends before your vacation starts to avoid critical points of attention as soon as you return.
Create a to-do list before you leave so you know what to focus on when you get back. There may be additional responsibilities waiting for you, but you'll have a starting point that will allow you to quickly jump back into work.
Go to Bed Early Before the Return
The night before you return to work, try going to bed earlier than normal. This will help ensure that you get plenty of rest before you start a new work week. You can go back to work completely refreshed and ready to tackle the workday.
Get Your Workspace Organized
Get your workspace organized before you leave for vacation so it's in good shape when you get back. If were in too much of a rush to begin your time off, this may not have been taken care of. Take a few moments upon your return to get organized so you can get a good start.
Manage Your Inbox
If you haven't been keeping up with email over your vacation, take time to organize your inbox. Browse through all of the new subject lines you've missed to determine what's important and what can go in the trash. Respond to urgent messages, and mark the others when you have more time.
Get Caught Up on Everything You Missed
Make sure you have viewed all important emails and check in with any communication platforms your company uses (e.g. Slack). Talk to your manager and colleagues to get filled in on what you missed when you were gone as well as any new assignments. Get caught up as best you can so you can address new tasks.
Prioritize Tasks
Once you've gotten caught up on what needs to be done, prioritize your tasks to tackle the most important things first. The first day back might be a little slower than a typical workday since you're catching up on missed days. Get as much done as possible, but prioritizing will help you make the most efficient use of your time. Perhaps more trivial tasks can wait until the next day.
Eliminate Distractions
Once you've talked to your manager and/or colleagues and gotten caught up on what you missed and what needs to be done, it's time to eliminate distractions. Focus on the task at hand and see it through until it's time to move onto the next one, and then repeat.
Take Care of Yourself
Don't forget to take care of yourself. You might be in a rush to get caught up, but that doesn't mean you should skip breaks. Give yourself chances to catch your breath and hit the reset button to avoid getting burned out on your first day back. Remember that you're transitioning back into the work mindset. Don't overwhelm yourself. Exercise and eat healthy food.
Getting back to work after a vacation doesn't need to be stressful. If you take advance steps to prepare for your return and get organized and focused upon your return, you can get back into the swing of things with little to no problem.
