How to Know You're Ready to Quit Your Job and Start Your Business Full Time

Consider these questions before transitioning from employee to entrepreneur.

Have you been preparing to start a small business? Maybe you've already started it but haven't been able to dedicate enough time to it because you still have a full-time job. If you're thinking of making the move to becoming a full time business owner, consider the following questions.

Are You Financially Prepared?

Before quitting your job, you'll need to be financially secure enough to move forward with your own business. You should have a good financial safety net in place. At least six months of living expenses is  recommended. You'll need to be prepared for some financial uncertainty. The more you have saved up, the better. Consider your personal finances as well as startup costs.

Figure out how much capital you'll need to get your business off the ground and keep it going until it becomes profitable. Factor in costs such as equipment, legal fees, marketing, inventory, real estate and office space. This is a lot to take on without the normal stream of income you've become accustomed to. Don't forget about health insurance, which you may lose if you've been receiving it from an employer.

How Valid Is Your Business Plan?

You must have great confidence in your business plan to be able to depend on it without the reliability of your steady job. Has your  idea been tested and proven? Have you conducted enough market research? Have you identified a clear need for your product or service? Do you have an understanding of your target customers? Do plenty of testing and gather feedback. It's a good idea to build at least a small customer base who can support your business before moving into it on a full-time basis. Know your strategy, mission, and growth plan. Your revenue model is key.

Are You Ready Emotionally?

Are you emotionally ready to let go of the stability of a full-time job (and its benefits) to go out on your own? There is almost certain to be a fair amount of stress involved. You will need to be mentally tough, resilient, and willing to face uncertainty. You should prepare mentally for the possibility that your business might fail or face significant setbacks. If you're ready to take the plunge, try to build a support system. Stay close with friends and family who can give you the encouragement you need. Find other ways to maintain your mental health.

Do You Have the Knowledge and Skills You Need?

Your own business is more than a great idea. You need the knowledge and skills to see it through. If you're unsure about this, you might want to postpone your plans and acquire the education you need.

If your business is going to be successful, your abilities must be there. Spend
time learning about your industry as well as core business skills, such as
marketing, sales, budgeting, and leadership. You might find it best to go back
to school before moving forward with your business. In some cases, other online
courses may suffice. Just don't go into business without having the basics down
at the bare minimum.

Do You Have an Exit Strategy?

Do you know how you're going to leave your job? Have a plan ready, as well as a resume, just in case you need to find more work, even if on a temporary or part-time basis.

"Although you might feel like screaming, 'I quit!', the best way to leave a job is on good terms," says Entrepreneur.com.* "Some contracts don't require a certain notice period, but conventional career advice recommends giving your boss two weeks' notice and a written resignation letter. Depending on the circumstances, your employer could ask you to stay on for a stretch or request you pack up your pens and go. In case you find yourself immediately out of the office, it makes sense to have a resume ready before you call it quits."
