How to Set Career Goals for 2026 and Beyond

Practical steps to help you plan and achieve long-term success.

As the new year gets underway, you might be looking for ways to improve your career. The work landscape is constantly shifting, and long-term planning may feel simultaneously more important than ever and more challenging. Don’t let this deter you from making your career a focus. Here are five tips for setting career goals in 2026 and beyond.

Start with a Clear Vision

As you create your career goals, begin with a clear vision for what you want out of your future. What is your long-term career vision? Before writing out goals or timelines, consider where you’d like to be within the next five to ten years. That doesn’t necessarily mean specific job titles, but what kind of work and life do you want to have by then? What kind of problems do you want to solve? Are you looking for a fast-paced environment, one that’s stable, one that’s creative,
or one that’s structured? What level of responsibility or influence do you wish
to achieve? What about your work-life balance? Do you value income growth over flexibility, prestige, or purpose?

These are the kinds of questions you should ask yourself as you form your vision, which can then help guide your goals.

Determine Short-Term and Long-Term Goals

Once you have a vision, start setting more specific goals for yourself. Think both in terms of short-term goals and long-term ones.

"Often, people will categorize their goals as short-term or long-term," says Coursera.* "There’s no established distinction between short-term and long-term career goals, but generally, short-term goals can be accomplished more immediately—for example, within a few months—and long-term goals will take more time—perhaps a year or longer. Acknowledging how much time your goals may take you to accomplish can enable you to set realistic expectations, prioritize tasks, and track your progress. Ideally, all of your career goals will exist within the same ecosystem in which your short-term career goals bring you closer to achieving your long-term career goals."

Consider Factors Beyond Personal Preferences

As you think about your goals, it can help to maintain a sense of realism. You might need to think outside the box of your own personal preferences and take into account what is most realistic based on your skills, abilities, life situation, and means.

"You should consider factors beyond personal preferences," says MIT.** "What is
the current demand for this field? If the demand is low or entry is difficult, are you comfortable with risk? What qualifications are required to enter the field? Will it require additional education or training? How will selecting this option affect you and others in your life? Gather advice from friends, colleagues, and family members. Consider potential outcomes and barriers for each of your final options."

Assess Your Personal Skills

Your personal skills play a major role in your career path, and the skills you have or plan to obtain are key in your ability to set realistic goals. Make your plans practical. Assess your skill set and gain an understanding of your strengths and areas for development. Consider not only your technical skills (specialized knowledge for a role), but also your soft skills (communication, leadership, emotional intelligence, collaboration) to work effectively with others, and future-proof skills (adaptability, digital literacy, critical thinking, data skills, AI fluency, etc.) to be competitive and successful for the future.

Determine the skills you are strongest in, which ones you are consistently praised for, which ones you need to stay relevant in your industry, and which ones will help you fulfill your long-term vision. Compare the skills you have to the ones you need for the roles you wish to fill. Then, this can inform you of the path you need toward your goals.

Have an Understanding of the State of Your Industry

The more you understand the state of your industry, the easier it will be to set realistic goals and determine the best ways to fulfill them. Try to anticipate future trends. Spend time researching key technologies, industry forecasts, market projections, skills shortages, in-demand certifications, new emerging roles, and how companies are adapting. Stay informed.

Setting career goals isn’t about being able to predict the future, but it is about positioning yourself to thrive in an uncertain future. If you are self-aware and have your finger on the pulse of the industry, you can gain a good sense of what it will take to reach the vision you’ve set for yourself. Make smart decisions as you plan and build the career that you want this year and beyond.
