Five Tips for Getting Hired in the AI Era

Build the skills employers are looking for in a changing job market.

Nevada leads the nation in job growth. According to David Schmidt, chief economist for the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), the state's employment growth is running at more than double the pace of South Carolina, the second-fastest-growing state. From early 2025 through early 2026, Nevada added more than 30,000 jobs, pushing statewide employment to the highestlevel in the state's history.

Meanwhile, artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting just about every field of work. Some roles are on their way to obsolescence, while others are emerging. There is still plenty of room for humans to work, even if technology can feel intimidating to someone looking for a job. The following are five tips for getting hired in the AI era.

1. Learn How to Use AI Tools

Take the time to familiarize yourself with AI tools. You do not have to be a software engineer or a data scientist to do so. Some employers may simply look for workers who are familiar with using ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, and other tools. Experiment with different apps in your free time and research how to use them for different purposes. If you are looking to get hired in a specific industry, learn ways in which AI is being used in that field.

Consider taking free or low-cost courses that teach you how to use AI in different ways and how it can improve productivity in your field of interest. During interviews, be prepared to discuss how you have used technology to solve problems. When you can demonstrate to a potential employer that you have some familiarity with the tools, it may put you at an advantage over other job candidates who do not. You do not necessarily have to prove yourself to be an expert. An employer may simply look for a candidate who is comfortable learning and adapting to technology.

2. Strengthen Human Skills

While it is helpful to understand how AI is used in your industry, it can also be valuable to strengthen your human skills. As AI is used for more tasks, skills that AI does not perform as well are in demand. Sharpen skills like critical thinking,
communication, leadership, empathy, creativity, and teamwork. These are
qualities that AI cannot easily replicate, and they are valued by employers.

Do not be shy about highlighting examples of these qualities on your resume. Do not just list job responsibilities. Share accomplishments that involve problem solving, collaboration, or creativity, and be prepared to discuss them in interviews. Show a prospective employer the value you may bring to the role.

3. Research the Company You Wish to Work For

Research the company you hope to work for as thoroughly as possible. The more you understand how it operates, the better prepared you may be.

"Go above and beyond!" writes Meredith Leigh Moore of Leverette Weekes in a Forbes piece.* "Research the company’s recent work and be prepared to share how you would add value. Demonstrate your creativity by including how you’d
leverage AI to help them achieve their goals more efficiently, and you are sure
to stand out. Connect with current employees for informational interviews and
to share your interest in working at the organization."

4. Build a Strong Personal Brand

Cultivate a strong personal brand. Employers often learn about candidates before interviews based on information available online. Present yourself professionally through your online presence and social media. A clear personal brand may help you stand out from other applicants. Highlight your accomplishments, interests, and skills. LinkedIn can be a useful platform for this. Use a professional photo and share content relevant to your industry of interest. List certifications and volunteer work. If you are comfortable writing, consider maintaining a blog to share your insights. If applicable, maintain an online portfolio of your work.

5. Be Willing to Respectfully Disagree When Appropriate

Disagreement can demonstrate critical thinking, which is a valuable human skill. Many employers may look for this quality.

"The cliché version of teamwork advice is 'be a team player,' which is too vague," says Ivo Bernardo at Towards Data Science.** "The thing I actually screen for in interviews is whether someone can disagree with me constructively in a 45-minute conversation. I’ll float an opinion that’s deliberately a bit off,
about an architectural choice, or a process question, or how to scope a
project. I want to see how the candidates think and if they can trade ideas and
opinions without becoming defensive. The bad responses are obvious ones (just
agreeing with me, or arguing aggressively). Disagreeing well is a skill that
compounds with experience, but you can get a head start just by watching how
badly most young people do it."

AI is changing the way companies hire and the skills they value. That does not mean it is eliminating the need for talented people. Rather than focusing on the challenges technology may present, consider it an opportunity to show a potential employer what you have to offer.
