A routing/transit number is a unique 9-digit number assigned to each financial institution by the American Bankers Association (ABA). Some financial institutions have a routing/transit number for each state in which they do business. The routing/transit number is used to identify where funds are coming from during monetary transfers from one financial institution to another.

The routing number can be found at the bottom left corner of your personal checks. The routing/transit number is followed by the account number and check number. In some cases, the order of the checking account number and check number is reversed. See image below.
